Burn Up The Road

The Great Wall of China, Winter 2018

When traveling, layovers are often a begrudging necessity. However, there are times when layovers can be used to the traveler’s advantage, and make the most of the downtime.

In the winter of 2018, such an opportunity presented itself while planning a series of long-haul flights from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, where I was living at the time, to the Philippines, my primary travel destination.

The most logical and affordable option at the time was to book a connecting flight from Ulaanbaatar to Beijing, China. The layover however, would be just over ten hours before departing to Manila, Philippines. A well-preserved section of the Great Wall of China can be reached from the Beijing international airport in under two hours!

It was time well-spent. The Great Wall of China, one of the wonders of the ancient world, impresses the viewer with it’s grand scale, monument to human ingenuity, and ultimately, the often futility of blocking the march of history.
